We hosted the BMC Youth Climbing Series
Here at Calshot, we proudly hosted the fourth round (roped) of the BMC (British Mountaineering Council) Youth Climbing Series on Saturday 6th November 2021.
Attracting hundreds across the country, the Youth Climbing Series (YCS) is a national climbing competition for young people (aged 8 – 17), giving them the opportunity to show off their skills and compete at a national level. Team GB coaches also use YCS to select the GB development team – so it’s especially exciting for those hoping to take their climbing to the next level!
There are four regional rounds; two roped and two boulder (for all eight regions across England and Wales) and the series culminates in a two-day Grand Final.

It was incredible opportunity for young climbers here at Calshot, with approximately 120 climbers (aged 8 -17) competing on site on the day. We were lucky enough to catch up with one competitor, Oli:
How long have you been climbing?
I have been climbing about 3 years.
Do you have a favourite type of route?
I love using arêtes and volumes as I often have to find a different way to climb because I'm smaller. It's fun trying to break the betas too!
Do you have a favourite bit of kit?
I really like my climbing shoes (5 10 Kirigamis).
Who do you admire, who inspires you?
I don't really have a favourite climber. So many people that I climb with inspire me. I look up to Lucy Garlick who I train with at White Spider as she has always had to find her own beta and helps me with mine. It was really inspiring watching her come 6th overall at the Youth World Championships in Russia this year.
Thank you Oli - we can't wait to welcome you back to climb at Calshot!
