Doorway Painting Conservation

After painstakingly scraping away layers of paint on the entrance doorway banner, specialist heritage conservators from Lincoln Conservation discovered that the banner had been painted over with black paint, covering up much of the fine detail.

They discover that the banner originally had blue-green coloured bordering featuring gold leaf, and ornate calligraphic lines around the text which had been painted freehand. The banner has now been spectacularly restored to its former design, welcoming visitors to the Royal Victoria Chapel in 2018.
