Raise the roof

The fundraising event took place at the Park over two weekends in July 2017

Raise the Roof was a fundraising event organised to help the Friends of Royal Victoria Country Park meet their target of £30,000 for the Heritage Lottery Fund project.

Visitors were given the opportunity to buy and decorate slates for the Chapel roof, leaving their own mark on the restoration project. Visitors who couldn’t attend the event were able to make donations online and leave messages that were written on slates on their behalf.

Messages were received from as far afield as Australia and from the families of former hospital patients asking for the name of their loved one to be recorded on a slate.

Generations of local families decorated slates to mark their own connection with the site and significant family events, including proposals, weddings and christenings. It’s lovely to think that when these slates are removed or replaced in years to come, those personal stories or messages will be rediscovered by future generations.

Approximately 900 slates were sold and decorated over the two weekends of the event with the support of 20 volunteers and the wider Park staff, raising £6,700 for the Friends of Royal Victoria Country Park.
