School sessions

We look forward to welcoming you and your class to the Royal Victoria Chapel. We offer a range of school sessions to inspire students and encourage them to engage with the history of the Royal Victoria Military Hospital and the vital role it played in treating military personnel from around the world.

Why not add a guided tour or tower visit to your day? We offer discounted group rates for schools.

We also offer a souvenir guidebook – an enjoyable read bursting with information and photographs of the site. These are on sale at the Chapel, or we can add them to your booking.

Workshops

View our range of workshops for schools from Foundation stage up to key stage 4.

Sessions for home educators

We cater for educational visits to study themes across the curriculum with a range of ages from Foundation Stage to Key Stage 4 (GCSE). Please look at our Primary and Secondary School pages for details of our formal offer. We are happy to work with you to adapt any of these sessions to meet the particular needs of your group, or to put an alternative programme together.

Please note, the minimum group size for workshop bookings is 10 students of the appropriate age group. Younger/older children cannot attend these booked sessions. Groups can bring older/younger children to the Royal Victoria Chapel and Royal Victoria Country Park. They must be included in your numbers on the booking form and your group must arrange for them to visit the exhibitions or explore the wider Park and Netley Military Cemetery (as appropriate) during the workshop session.

Please ensure your adult/student ratio meets our safety policy requirements:

  • Foundation Stage/KS1: 1 adult to every 6 students
  • KS2: 1 adult to every 10 students (1:6 if visit will include a Tower tour)
  • Secondary school visits: 1 adult to every 15 students
Outreach visits

If it’s too difficult or too far for you to come to visit the Royal Victoria Chapel and the Park, let us come to you instead! Our Education staff and volunteers can visit your school to lead workshops and assemblies on themes similar to those we cover here.

Outreach workshops

All of our workshops can be adapted for an outreach session at school, whilst photographs and video can be used to help children picture what the hospital looked like and give some context to their work. We are also happy to work with you to develop outreach for other topics across the curriculum.

Assemblies

We are happy to come into school and lead Year Group, Key Stage or Whole School assemblies on these (or similar) themes:

  • Remembrance
  • Important places in our area
  • Historical events (including the centenary of the end of WW1)
  • Famous people in our area
  • People who help us
  • Scientists and scientific developments
  • World Health Day & World Mental Health Day
  • World Poetry Day (Wilfred Owen was a patient at the hospital)

We can cater for educational visits to study themes across the curriculum at all levels.  If you can’t see what you are looking for on our website, please contact us using our online contact form. We will work with you to put an appropriate programme together.
