You can apply to be exempt of a parking restriction, these are called dispensations and waivers. They apply to yellow lines (waiting restrictions) and are suitable for:
- small works
- wedding cars
Do not use dispensations or waivers for general parking of private vehicles.
We will not grant a dispensation or waiver if:
- it could cause a hazard to other road users or pedestrians
- a loading ban applies
- other restrictions apply such as a bus stop clearway
You will need to tell us why you need the dispensation or waiver when you apply. For example, if you need constant access to tools to carry out works. In this case you will need to send us a job sheet for the period required.
If you park in a restricted area and you do not meet the above criteria, you may receive a penalty charge notice. If you need to park in a restricted area at short notice, you can apply for a dispensation or waiver at that point. You may have up to 30 minutes to get the dispensation or waiver.
You must apply online for a dispensation or waiver. They cost £10 per day but are free for funeral and wedding cars that are from a private address. You can pay weekly. A 24 hour notice period is required.
The following are exempt from parking restrictions:
- emergency vehicles
- highways maintenance
- public utilities undertaking unplanned emergency works
Carers have a one-hour exemption via a permit.
