In the countryside

Towards the countryside, roads might be narrower, without pavements or streetlights

If there's no pavement, find a grass verge or bank to walk on. If you must walk on the road, stay as far away from traffic as possible

Don't walk in the same direction as traffic is travelling - face oncoming vehicles and check they've seen you

Speed limits are different on rural roads and cars may be going quickly nearby - stay alert!

Carry a torch if you're somewhere without streetlights. Also, wear reflective clothes to help drivers see you
