Planned night works
Wednesday 14 October there will be up to five nights of road closures on the A33 to undertake resurfacing work. The works will be carried out on weekdays only between the hours of 8pm and 6am. The works are being undertaken at night to minimise disruption to traffic, as well as ensuring the safety of road users and the workforce. A signed diversion will be in place to re-direct traffic during these periods. Please view the diversion plans 1 & 2.
On 2 July 2020, the Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment gave approval to implement the proposed highway improvements to the A33 at the South Drive junction.
Hampshire County Council will be delivering the works through its Highway Maintenance contractor, Skanska. Works are due to commence on 27 July 2020 for an approximate duration of 14 weeks.
Until recently much of the work has been completed under minimal traffic management and off-peak traffic signals to reduce the impact of the works on A33 traffic. We have now entered the phase of the works where 24 hour temporary traffic signals are required for the safety of the work force and the road users. These will be in place until mid-October. The A33 does carry a significant volume of traffic at peak times and the 24 hour temporary signals will cause unavoidable delays during these periods. Please allow more time for your journey.
- Scheme overview
Alongside the recent A33 junction capacity improvements package (at five congested junctions) there have been further works carried out recently by Hampshire County Council to ensure long term road resilience.
In October 2019 Hampshire Highways undertook a large carriageway resurfacing maintenance scheme along the A33, between the Thornhill Way traffic signal junction and Turgis Green. The £1.5million project lasted around 5 weeks, with all works undertaken at night and the road re-opened to traffic each morning. Over this duration contractors laid 6600 tonnes of new asphalt to replace the existing worn road surface on this busy route linking Basingstoke and Reading, as well as carrying out significant drainage improvements.
The final stage of the A33 capacity improvements and this strategic maintenance work is to deliver a junction improvement at the A33 junction with South Drive (the access to Sherfield School). This junction currently limits capacity due to a lack of a dedicated right-turn facility, which contributes to peak-time congestion on the A33.
The proposed scheme will provide a right-turn lane at the A33 junction with South Drive to reduce the queuing and delays that right turning vehicles generate on the northbound A33. This will improve the flow of A33 northbound traffic under current and forecast levels of future traffic. The scheme will widen the existing road around the junction to provide the extra space for the right turn lane. It will also deliver drainage maintenance and improvement works, along with resurfacing of the existing road surface around the junction.
