Work to widen the roundabout and install the new traffic signals is now complete and the junction is operating well.  Following feedback from drivers, cyclists and residents  adjustment works are underway to prevent potentially dangerous U-turns at Popley Way.  Signs erected.  Works completed
Scheme overview

These junction improvements, along with future proposals along the A33 corridor, are being implemented in order to help address existing problems of journey time unreliability along the A33 and around Basingstoke.

In addition to increasing capacity and improving traffic flow, these works also aim to improve access to proposed local development and existing local business parks.

Improvements include:

A33 Reading Road / A339 Ringway Junction:

  • Construct an additional queuing lane on the A33 approach to the junction
  • Additional lane on the northern section of the gyratory
  • Updating the existing traffic signals

Popley Way / A33 Junction:

  • Additional left turn slip lane at the Popley Way junction with the A33
  • Updated pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities
  • Updated signals at the junction
Public consultation now closed

In July 2015 there were three public exhibitions about these works and related major highway improvement works across Basingstoke. The consultation ran from 1 July to 13 August 2015. You can still view the exhibition document.

A total of 82 questionnaires were returned, with feedback being received on all the upcoming schemes in Basingstoke, as well as general feedback on the issues faced by Basingstoke as a whole.

Hampshire County Council are currently reviewing the returned questionnaires and will be publishing a report on this website shortly.

Funding arrangements

The budget for the Popley Way junction and A33/A339 Junction works combined is £1.95million. Following a successful bid for Local Growth Funding and final approval of the business case, the Enterprise M3 LEP has allocated £1.75million of funding towards the works. There is also an additional £0.2million of funding made up from local developer contributions.
