Bramley Access Improvements

Last update: September 2021

Latest updates

Hampshire County Council appointed Mildren Construction Ltd to carry out the works to upgrade the junction of Sherfield Road and Bramley Lane in Bramley.

The main works commenced in June 2021 and completed in September 2021. During this period, the work was completed in phases, to minimise the impact on traffic through the railway crossing.

The scheme provides the following benefits:

  • Improved pedestrian facilities around the junction, including a new crossing with refuge island on Sherfield Road east of the junction with Bramley Lane;
  • Widening the carriageway at the junction of Bramley Lane/Sherfield Road, to assist traffic turning left from Bramley Lane onto Sherfield Road, thereby reducing delays during periods when the railway level crossing is closed.

Works completed.

Scheme overview
Drivers and pedestrians using Sherfield Road experience long delays due to the presence of the level crossing at Bramley Station.  The barrier crossing is frequently down, resulting in queues which block the junction of Bramley Lane/Sherfield Road and other adjacent accesses.  Close to this junction are popular local village facilities, Bramley Station and the local primary school, all of which are accessed by many local residents arriving on foot.

The scheme objectives are to:
  • Provide improved pedestrian facilities around the junction, including a new pedestrian refuge island on Sherfield Road east of the junction with Bramley Lane. This will improve safety for pedestrians including many school children who cross the road between queueing cars in this location.
  • Widen the carriageway at the junction of Bramley Lane/Sherfield Road.
  • This will assist traffic exiting Bramley Lane wishing to turn left; a manoeuvre which is currently restricted by those waiting to turn right when the level crossing is closed.
