Fareham NO2 Cycle Links

Hampshire County Council and Fareham Borough Council have developed a package of measures to be delivered before the end of 2019, to meet national legal compliance by 2020.

The final package of measures has been designed to incentivise shifting journeys to bus and bike, through the provision of better facilities:

  • Cycle infrastructure schemes with supporting marketing & community engagement;
  • real time information at bus stops;
  • more reactive signals at Quay Street, focussed on reducing congestion on the A27;
  • A financial incentive for taxi drivers to upgrade their vehicles to newer, less-polluting models.

The package consists of nine infrastructure improvements, located in Gosport and Fareham with associated route signage: 

  • Improvement A - Elson Road & Heritage Way
    Description of works; re-lining, signing and de-cluttering for cyclists at the junction;

  • Improvement B - Heritage Way
    Description of works; a minor improvement to replace missing tactile paving on an existing shared use path on Heritage Way in Gosport;

  • Improvement D - Foster Rd
    Description of works; widening an existing cycle bypass lane into the verge at the junction of Foster Road and South Street;

  • Improvements E & F – Marine Parade
    Description of works; the removal and relocation of a low-use bus shelter from an existing shared path and minor resurfacing of the former hovercraft slipway to provide a missing link in the existing local cycle network;

  • Improvement H - Linkway / Seamead
    Description of works; widening the existing footway along a stretch of Peak Lane in Fareham to create a shared use path;

  • Improvement I - Burnt House Lane
    Description of works; conversion of an existing pelican crossing on Burnt House Lane in Fareham to a toucan crossing;
    Rocon Ltd have been appointed and works start on Monday 19 August for a duration of approximately six weeks;
    pedestrian access and access to adjacent properties will be maintained and a temporary pedestrian crossing will be in operation for the duration of the works.

  • Improvement J - Peak Lane
    Description of works; widening the existing footway along a stretch of Peak Lane in Fareham to create a shared use path;

  • Improvement K - Longfield Avenue
    Description of works; widening the carriageway at Longfield Avenue in Fareham to accommodate a new refuge island;
    Rocon Ltd have been appointed and works start on Tuesday 27 August for a duration of approximately six weeks;
    pedestrian access and access to adjacent properties will be maintained and a temporary two-way traffic lights will be in operation for the duration of the works;
