Hambledon flood alleviation

To reduce the risk of flooding to properties and to keep the village roads open in the event of flooding

Last update: May 2017

Scheme overview

The Big Pipe

Work to install the ‘big pipe’ in Upper West Street and East Street was finished December 2016. This included the provision of pump point access covers for residents to connect pump hoses to in the event of flooding.

Work in the village has now restarted. The County Council's contractor, Mildren, is completing fencing at the headwall near Lotts Store and next to the ditch at Lotts Store to Hook Vinney.

May - August: Resurfacing works to the road and preparation for the footways to be surfaced in Upper West Street and East Street.

The road surfacing will stretch from the Green Man junction, along West Street and East Street to the outskirts of village near Hambledon Vineyard. On completion, no road markings will be reinstated, except for give way markings at the junctions of Green High Street, Speltham Hill and Back Lane.

Following the completion of road surfacing, the footways will be resurfaced towards the end of August.

Drop-in sessions

Drop-in sessions for residents to meet staff from the contractor Mildren Construction Ltd will once again be provided at the Village Hall on the second Monday of each month from 3.00pm to 6pm, providing residents and businesses with an opportunity to ask the contractors any questions they made have about the scheme and associated traffic management.

The next meeting is on Monday 8 May 2017.

The County Council is committed to keeping residents informed of the order of works and any unexpected changes to traffic routes. Information is updated on this page, and sent to local media, and via Hambledon Parish Council’s website.

The contractor will ensure that all activities are communicated in good time to local residents and the travelling public. Information points at various locations in the village provide details about works as they progress.

Traffic management arrangements for Phase Three

Due to the limited space, we have to close sections of the road while road surfacing work is undertaken. Work is done in stages to minimise the disruption while providing sufficient space for the contractors to work. Vehicles will be required to park in alternative areas.

The signed diversion route as used for the Big Pipe works in Upper West Street and East Street will be in operation from 15 May depending on where the contractor is working.

Buses from 2 May will temporarily terminate at Old Barn Crescent.

From 2 May parents taking children to the village school are asked to park in Stewarts Green and walk with children via the footpath through the fields and the churchyard to the High Street.

Plans showing diversion routes

In these plans the thick red line shows the location of the road to be closed. The thin blue line shows the diversion route.
