- Scheme overview
-
Hampshire County Council are working in partnership with South Western Railway and Network Rail to construct a short length of footpath connecting the High Street to the westbound platform (services towards New Forest and Bournemouth) at Totton Station. The footpath will provide a secondary access to the westbound platform which will be step free making it easier for people with mobility impairments and pushchairs.
The following works will be carried out to improve accessibility to Totton Rail Station;
- Construction of a level footway connecting the southern (westbound) platform to Totton High Street;
- Installing staggered barriers to access the southern (westbound) platform;
- Installing new street lighting to accommodate pedestrians;
- 2m high closed boarded fence to be erected along the perimeter of the footpath;
- The existing uncontrolled crossing will be upgraded by removing the rail tracks from the footway on the north side of High Street, and the cobbles from the road will be resurfaced to create a smoother crossing, particularly for those with mobility impairments;
- Planting of 16 new trees later this year in the surrounding Totton area.
- Funding Arrangements
- Funding for the transport capital delivery schemes is separate from the County Council’s revenue budget and savings proposals. In the majority of cases funding comes from external grants and / or Section 106 contribution from developers. This funding usually has conditions that strictly control on how, where and when it can be spent.
