Decisions due this summer on future services

From older adults’ day services to school transport and planned road maintenance, this summer will see key decisions made on the future of some important County Council services delivered to Hampshire residents after April 2026

Jun 6 2025

The Local Authority will hold three Select Committee meetings this July to scrutinise recommendations developed following the findings of the Future Services Consultation – Spring 2025 held between March and May this year. The consultation asked for the public’s views on proposals in four service areas to change and reduce some local services to help the Authority meet a remaining budget shortfall of at least £97.6 million for 2025/26. More than 1,500 responses to the consultation were received.

At each Select Committee, County Councillors from across the Local Authority’s political parties will scrutinise the consultation results and savings recommendations, together with analysis of the potential impact on residents of the proposals if they go ahead. It will then be for the County Council’s Cabinet to carefully consider the officers’ recommendations in the context of the consultation responses, the feedback from the Select Committees and any deputations, when they make a collective final decision on 18 July.

Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Nick Adams-King said: “My thanks to all those Hampshire residents who provided their feedback on the potential ways we can make savings to help the County Council live within our means and prioritise the public services to residents who are most in need.

“This includes protecting children from harm, social care for older people, and supporting adults and children with disabilities and additional needs. Demand and costs in these areas are now at record levels and continue to increase.

“Until central government finds a sustainable way to fund social care, we will continue to focus on transforming how we work, being more efficient, and increasingly innovative and commercial in our approach to delivering services. We have made good progress with this work in the last 12 months and are beginning to see a way through to managing our pressures more sustainably.

“However, there is still a long way to go. The options proposed in the Future Services consultation would contribute around £9.9 million in total towards balancing the budget for 2025-26, while ensuring that the delivery of essential services for our most vulnerable residents is maintained.

“My Cabinet colleagues and I will carefully consider the officers’ recommendations made to us this summer in the context of the consultation responses, the feedback from the Select Committees and any deputations made to us.”
