Green & Thrifty Fortnight returns to Hampshire Libraries

Green & Thrifty Fortnight returns to Hampshire Libraries this month, offering residents a wide range of free events and eco-friendly activities designed to support more affordable and sustainable lifestyles

Feb 12 2026

Running from Saturday 14 February to Saturday 28 February, the programme provides practical inspiration to help people save money, reduce waste and build everyday resilience through hands-on learning and community engagement.

Libraries across the county will host clothing upcycling workshops, reuse and repair sessions, and practical activities focused on building skills for a changing world, while creative workshops, children’s story times and junk modelling craft sessions will introduce environmental themes in positive, enjoyable ways. With options suitable for all ages, the fortnight aims to show how small, realistic changes can benefit both household budgets and the environment.

Cllr Steve Forster, Executive Member for Education, oversees libraries as part of his remit and said: “Green & Thrifty Fortnight is a brilliant example of how our libraries support residents with practical, everyday skills that reduce costs and waste. Sustainable living doesn’t have to be expensive or overwhelming – small, simple actions like seed swaps and bird box making can make a big difference.”

He added: “Our libraries continue to be welcoming, inclusive spaces at the heart of our local communities. This programme offers something for all ages, and I encourage residents to explore what’s on at their local branch and get involved.”

Green & Thrifty Fortnight forms part of Hampshire Libraries’ wider commitment to helping residents navigate the cost of living by offering free, practical activities that show how upcycling, reusing and creative making can reduce everyday expenses. The initiative also reflects Hampshire County Council’s ongoing sustainability goals by encouraging Smart Living habits that cut waste, extend the life of household items and promote environmentally conscious choices.

By hosting the programme in libraries – free, open and welcoming spaces – the initiative ensures learning is available to everyone, including families, children and those who may not typically engage with environmental activities elsewhere. It also strengthens the role of libraries as community hubs where people can come together to learn, share skills and explore new ideas. Creative workshops, story times and craft sessions help introduce environmental themes in positive, enjoyable ways that promote long-term awareness without being prescriptive.

A mix of pre-bookable workshops and drop-in sessions will run across Hampshire Libraries throughout the fortnight. Residents can browse the full programme and secure places via the Green & Thrifty Fortnight event listings. The initiative forms part of the County Council’s year-round work to champion sustainable living, reduce waste and provide free, accessible opportunities for communities across the county.
