The advice comes as the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an Amber Heat-Health Alert for Hampshire until 9pm on Friday 14 August.

With high temperatures expected during the opening days of the festival, Hampshire County Council’s Public Health team is reminding people that spending long periods outdoors, walking between stages, dancing, camping and drinking alcohol can increase the risk of dehydration and heat-related illness.

By taking a few simple precautions, festival-goers can help keep themselves and others safe while enjoying the event.

Top tips for staying safe in the heat

  • Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Carry a refillable water bottle and make use of free water refill points.
  • Wear sunscreen, a hat and lightweight clothing.
  • Seek shade during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Avoid drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, which can increase the risk of dehydration.
  • Make sure you eat regularly. If you are preparing or eating your own food on site, please do so safely by washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water (especially after using the toilet, before eating, and after handling raw meat), cook food thoroughly, keep raw and ready-to-eat foods separate, and store food correctly.
  • Get enough rest and avoid spending too long in direct sunlight.
  • Look out for friends and others around you who may be struggling in the heat.

Spot the signs of heat-related illness

Watch out for:

  • Headaches.
  • Dizziness or confusion.
  • Feeling sick or losing your appetite.
  • Excessive sweating.
  • Muscle cramps.
  • Fast breathing or a rapid pulse.
  • A high temperature.
  • Extreme thirst.

If you or someone else develops these symptoms, move to a cool or shaded area, drink water and rest. If symptoms do not improve within 30 minutes, seek help from the festival’s medical services.

Johanna Jefferies, Associate Director, Public Health, Hampshire County Council, said: “We want everyone attending Boomtown to have a safe and enjoyable experience. With warm weather expected, it’s especially important to stay hydrated, protect yourself from the sun and look out for the people around you.

“Most heat-related illnesses can be prevented by taking simple precautions such as drinking water regularly, seeking shade and avoiding excessive alcohol. If you feel unwell, don’t ignore it and seek medical help on site if symptoms persist. Looking after yourself and others will help ensure everyone can enjoy the festival safely.”
