The historic Chapel, located within Royal Victoria Country Park, has been shortlisted for the Everyday History Heroes 2026 awards, organised by Findmypast and Heritage Open Days. It is one of only three sites across London and the South East to reach the shortlist and one of just 24 organisations nationwide recognised for keeping local history alive.
A public vote will now determine regional and national winners, with successful sites receiving a donation to support local community initiatives.
For nearly two centuries, the Royal Victoria Chapel has stood as a powerful reminder of the thousands of patients, nurses, doctors, and support staff whose dedication and compassion helped shape military healthcare in Britain.
As the only surviving part of the former Royal Victoria Military Hospital, which once stretched for a quarter of a mile along the shores of Southampton Water, the Chapel preserves the stories of a unique community. Through research, exhibitions, oral histories and creative interpretation, staff and volunteers bring to life the often-overlooked experiences of the people who lived and worked there, sharing their stories with visitors from across the world.

The Awards align with this year's national Heritage Open Days theme, Everyday Histories, which celebrates the extraordinary stories of ordinary people. As part of the festival, taking place nationally from 11 to 20 September, entry to sites is free of charge, giving visitors a unique opportunity to explore the history behind the places and people being celebrated. Royal Victoria Chapel will have a special Everyday Histories exhibition on display at weekends throughout the festival, with a crafts weekend on 12 - 13 September from 10am – 4pm, featuring displays of items made by past patients of Netley Military Hospital, live demonstrations and drop-in craft sessions.
