To allow the work to be carried out, the existing bridge will close throughout the construction period and diversion routes will be in place.
During the footbridge closure:
- A signed diversion route will provide access across the railway line in both directions. This will add approximately 10 minutes to journeys on foot.
- Access to Havant Railway Station: access to the rail station will remain in place throughout the construction.
The project is expected to take up to 12 months to complete - people can keep up to date with progress and sign up for regular e-bulletin updates via the scheme webpage.
The existing 79-year-old bridge, which spans the railway line, is showing increasing signs of deterioration and currently relies on temporary structural support to remain safe for use.
Once completed, the new crossing will provide significant improvements for residents and visitors. It will be twice as wide as the existing structure and feature gentler ramps, making it more accessible for cyclists, wheelchair, and mobility scooter users, as well as people travelling with prams or pushchairs. The additional width will also provide more space for people crossing the railway, helping to improve comfort and convenience for all users.
Councillor Kirsty North, Hampshire County Council's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Lead for Universal Services, said: "I'm pleased to confirm that construction will soon begin on this much-needed replacement bridge. Once complete, it will provide a safer, more accessible and attractive crossing for everyone who relies on this important connection. This is a complex project, with work taking place over a live railway line, and we recognise that the closure of the existing bridge and the introduction of diversion routes will cause some disruption. I would like to thank residents, businesses and visitors in advance for their patience while this essential work is carried out. While construction will take time, the end result will be a modern bridge that better serves the community, with greatly improved access for all."
Councillor Gillian Harris, Leader of Havant Borough Council, said: "This is a significant investment in Havant's future, and we're delighted to see construction begin. While we recognise there will be some temporary disruption during the works, the long-term benefits will be substantial, and we thank residents, businesses and visitors for their patience. Once complete, the new bridge will provide an accessible connection between key destinations in the town centre, strengthening links between commercial, cultural and residential areas. As an important part of the borough's regeneration ambitions, the project will support increased footfall, encourage investment and help ensure Havant remains a vibrant place to live, work and visit."
The cost of the scheme is £12.8 million, funded through a combination of Department for Transport grant funding, developer contributions, and £2.8 million from Havant Borough Council's Community Infrastructure Levy Fund.
