Councillor Kirsty North, the County Council’s Cabinet Lead Member for Universal Services, said: “I am pleased to approve delivery of this ambitious plan for Fair Oak, which will make travel on foot or by bicycle a safer, easier and credible method of transport. We’ve listened carefully to local residents and designed these improvements to support greener, healthier ways to get around. We recognise that residents have raised concerns about traffic speeds on Mortimers Lane. I’ve requested that additional signage and traffic calming measures be progressed alongside this scheme to help address those issues.”
The scheme will deliver walking and cycling infrastructure improvements along Mortimers Lane between Pembers Farm Avenue and the junction of the B3354 Winchester Road, the four-way signalised junction with Stubbington Way and Eastleigh Road and on Eastleigh Road along the southern footway up to Fratton Way. This includes:
• around 1.3km of new cycle route
• six continuous footways across side roads
• upgraded crossings for pedestrians and cyclists
• additional signage seeking to reduce vehicle speeds
• two new bus stops
Further improvements relating to safety on Mortimers Lane will be explored and where feasible will be included within the scheme.
Funding for the £3.4m scheme is coming from developer contributions (known as S106 funding).
