Consultation on changes to the school catchment area for The Vyne Community School, Basingstoke

This consultation will run from Tuesday 1 September 2026 to Tuesday 29 September 2026.

Hampshire County Council is reviewing and consulting upon the school catchment area for The Vyne Community School, Basingstoke.

Background

There is an ongoing disconnect between primary school catchment areas and linked secondary schools for families living in the northern part of the Four Lanes Junior School catchment. Although Four Lanes Junior School is a linked school for The Vyne Community School, a significant proportion of households situated in the northern section of its catchment area fall instead within the catchment area for Everest Community Academy. This misalignment is continuing to create confusion and inequity during the secondary transfer process.

In practice, this means that parents or carers in this area who name both their catchment and linked secondary school on main round Year 7 applications can be unsuccessful in securing a place at either school, as they do not rank high enough within either school’s oversubscription criteria. In recent admission rounds, families living in this area have been unsuccessful in securing a place at either school and instead have been allocated a school which is a greater distance from their home.

As a result, parental preference is being frustrated, with limited viable options available to affected families. This situation can lead to children being placed away from their established peer groups, creating additional social and logistical challenges.

A catchment change is therefore proposed to better align primary and secondary catchment areas and improve fairness and transparency in the admissions process.

Proposal

Hampshire County Council wishes to propose that the hatched area be added to the catchment area of The Vyne Community School.

As Everest Community Academy is its own admission authority, the academy trust would be required to undertake their own consultation to alter their catchment area.  In discussions with the LA, they have indicated that this is not something they are considering at present. The result of this proposal, if approved, is that the northern section of the Four Lanes Junior School catchment area, will become part of the catchment are for The Vyne Community School, whilst remaining in the catchment area for Everest Community Academy. Therefore, children here will be part of a shared catchment area (see link to map above).

There are no transitional arrangements proposed because families living in the affected area with children already in the school will retain catchment priority for the existing catchment school.

It is therefore proposed that the catchment boundary be redrawn for school admissions from September 2028 onwards (this includes those children making applications as part of the main round for year 7 for September 2028).

Any comments received will also be considered as part of the future statutory consultation on admission arrangements which takes place over six weeks in November and December 2026. A final decision which takes account of the statutory admissions consultation will be made by the Executive Member for Education in February 2027.
