Petition to ban HGVs on High Street, Hambledon and Church Lane, Hambledon

Response from Hampshire County Council, May 2025

I refer to your letter and petition dated 2 May 2025.

Hampshire County Council’s Safer Roads Team are currently working with the Parish Council to develop positive lorry route signing for All-soils. This will support drivers to follow a suitable route to and from the site.

Enforcement of the planning condition referred to is a matter for the South Downs National Park Authority as the local planning authority.

With regard to the application of a weight restriction, County Council policy prioritises resources for traffic regulation changes towards sites where there is a history of related casualty collisions so sites, such as this, where this criterion is not met are a lower priority. Furthermore, a positive system of direction signing for All-soils is likely to have a greater effect as it specifically applies to the traffic accessing the All-soils site and gives them specific instructions on the route to follow.

I appreciate your effort in bringing this matter to my attention.

Yours sincerely

Cllr Lulu Bowerman
Executive Member for Highways and Waste
