Petition - We want action on cleaner bridges - Chapel Gate and Vyne Road, Basingstoke
Response from Hampshire County Council, April 2022
I writing to you with regards to the residents’ petition submitted relating to the Chapel Hill/Vyne Road Bridge.
The works required for the enhanced pigeon proofing are the responsibility of Network Rail. We are in liaison with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council officers who are leading the discussions with Network rail in their capacity as the Environmental Health authority. Whilst we still see the responsibility as falling on Network Rail, Hampshire County Council has put forward a contribution of £20,000 to assist with the works as a one-off good will gesture to help move the solution forward, recognising the importance of this route for residents walking and cycling into town and beyond.
Hampshire County Council very much hope the issue can be progressed positively between Network Rail and Basingstoke and Dean Borough Council so that the public can make full use of this important route into Basingstoke town centre.
Kind regards
Cllr Russell Oppenheimer
Executive Member for Highways Operations
