Petition - Speed reduction measure on Fitzroy Road, Fleet

Response from Hampshire County Council, May 2021

Thank you for your recent petition.

Our Traffic & Safety resources are targeted at casualty reduction, with priority given to locations where there are treatable recurring patterns or clusters of reported injury accidents. We have access to the Police database of all injury accidents reported throughout Hampshire and this is used to formulate our annual safety scheme programmes. Whilst our policy is sometimes perceived as ‘waiting for an accident to happen’, there is considerable demand for safety measures countywide and we have a finite amount of resource, which must be used where we are confident it will make a difference. Our approach does not compromise our priority on safety, instead it sharpens the focus of our work to concentrate on casualty reduction measures and road safety education in locations where we have a proven history of people being hurt on the highway.

The safety record on Fitzroy Road is very good compared to many other less fortunate locations across Hampshire, with the last reported injury accident recorded in 2014. This is a very difficult situation to improve upon and, with a 30mph speed limit already in place, there is very little the County Council could reasonably consider that would significantly further influence driver behaviour on this route. Speed enforcement in the responsibility of the Police and you may wish to refer your concerns to them using the 101 non-emergency number or via their website - https://www.hampshire.police.uk/contact/contact-us/

I appreciate this will not be the response you were hoping for, but I hope this explains the Council’s position.

Yours sincerely
