Petition for Safety-Led Speed Limit Reduction Proposal - Hordle Lane, SO41 0HW
Response from Hampshire County Council, May 2026
Thank you for your petition.
Due to high demand for road safety measures, the County Council prioritises locations with recurring injury collisions. Using data from the Police the casualty history for Hordle Lane has been investigated between the A337 Christchurch Road at its southern end and Everton Road at the north with no casualties being recorded in the latest 5 years. Extending this to ten years brings up the two fatal collisions which you mention in your petition, but no other injury collisions. You may have seen in the press coverage at the time of each of these tragic events that the drivers were under the influence of alcohol.
The characteristics of Hordle Lane are similar to roads across the New Forest and despite the two tragic alcohol related fatalities, it is a low priority for a speed limit reduction below the existing 40mph and no further action is planned at the present time. I appreciate that this may not be the outcome you were seeking, but I hope this explanation clarifies our position.
Yours sincerely

Executive Member for Highways and Passenger Transport
