Petition - Miller Close, Ashley, New Milton, resident's petition regarding road safety and speeding

Response from Hampshire County Council, October 2026

Thank you for your recent petition requesting a reduced speed limit in Miller Close, New Milton. Your supplementary request for parking controls on Miller Close, near the junction of Ashley Common Road, has also been considered.

With responsibility for 5,500 miles of highway, the County Council receives consistently high demand for highway safety measures and must therefore focus our limited resources on locations where there is a recurring pattern of collisions resulting in human injury.

When assessing requests for changes to speed limits or the introduction of parking controls, we consider factors such as the character of the road, traffic conditions and, importantly, the road safety record.

Whilst I appreciate that the death of a pet will have been very distressing, Miller Close is a short residential cul-de-sac serving a small number of properties and has a good road safety record. There is no history of human injury collisions that would indicate a road safety problem. As a result, there is no evidence to support the introduction of a lower speed limit or parking restrictions at this location. For these reasons, the County Council does not propose to introduce a reduced speed limit or other highway safety measures at the present time.

Thank you for taking the time to bring your concerns to our attention.

Yours sincerely

Cllr Steve Forster
Executive Member for Highways and Passenger Transport
