Petition - Parking Notices Marine Drive West, Barton on Sea
Response from Hampshire County Council, May 2023
Thank you for your petition regarding your request for parking notices to be erected in Marine Drive West.
Firstly, let me say that the County Council is aware of the issues you are experiencing and has committed to investigate these and introduce parking controls in the future, subject to appropriate consultation. As the first step in this process, we will be surveying the existing situation to enable us to identify options and engage with the local Parish Council and County Councillor to select a suitable proposal to take forward for wider consultation.
This consultation is part of the legal process the County Council must follow before any signs that restrict parking can be erected on the highway. Any signs and markings that restrict parking need to be backed up with a Traffic Regulation Order (the legal instrument that local authorities use to implement highway restrictions) and this process includes a period of formal consultation. Representations received during this period, both in support or objecting to proposals, must be taken into consideration.
We have been able to implement similar restrictions in Lee-on-the-Solent in recent times, but it is important that the correct processes are followed to ensure that any new parking controls are appropriate, legally enforceable and do not merely transfer problems to nearby areas.
I hope that you are reassured we are actively looking at solutions for the problems in this location.
Yours sincerely
Councillor Adams-King
Lead Executive Member for Universal Services
