SIR JOHN HODDINOTT, CBE, QPM, MA (Cantab) FRSA, DL
1. The Authority was shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic and unexpected death on 13 August of Sir John Hoddinott at the age of 56.
2. Sir John had been Chief Constable of Hampshire for 11 years until his retirement in September 1999. He was a third generation Hampshire Police Officer, his father and grandfather having both served in the Force. Following service with the Metropolitan Police and the Surrey Constabulary, where he served as Assistant Chief Constable, he became Deputy Chief Constable in Hampshire in September 1983. During his period as Chief Constable in Hampshire he served as President of the Association of Chief Police Officers in 1994/95 at a time when the whole Police Service was beginning to grapple with the reforms advocated by the Sheehy Inquiry.
3. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Police Service and the community Sir John was knighted in 1998.
4. Sir John died whilst working on a review for the Home Secretary of an operation carried out by Cleveland Constabulary.
5. The Chairman, on behalf of the Authority, has written to Lady Hoddinott and her family expressing the Authority's profound sadness at the loss of Sir John who was an outstanding Police Officer who worked tirelessly for the communities of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and for policing generally.
