The following incidents of interest have occurred since the last meeting: |
|
17 May |
A fire at Roberts Distribution Ltd, Drivers Wharf, Southampton was attended by 7 pumps, and a Special Equipment Unit. The fire was contained in the roof space of the two storey office block and extinguished using one jet, one hosereel and breathing apparatus. |

31 May |
As further evidence of the wide range of special service calls the Service are asked to deal with, a call was received to assist the RSPCA in the rescue of a four foot iguana stuck in an oak tree. The incident at Heath Gardens, Butlocks Heath was attended by a crew from Hamble who successfully performed the rescue. |

5 June |
The Service dealt with a difficult and protracted fire at Fratton Goods Yard, Goldsmith Avenue, Portsmouth. Four pumping appliances and an Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP) were used. The two storey building 30 metres by 10 metres and two lorry trailers were severely damaged by fire. Firefighting was hampered by the sandwich panel construction of the roof panels and the ALP was used to assist personnel gain access and contain the fire. |

9 June |
Appliances from Eastleigh Fire Station including a Multi Role Vehicle (MRV) carrying the rescue equipment load dealt with the rescue of two male persons from a road traffic accident. A car had left the Fair Oak Road in Bishopstoke and entered the river with the two male occupants being trapped inside the vehicle. Both were released, one being placed on a stretcher and lifted from the river using the Hi-Ab crane on the MRV. |

18 June |
A fire at HM Dockyard, Portsmouth involving a single storey building 30 metres by 80 metres was extinguished using 5 jets, 1 hosereel and 10 breathing apparatus. A turntable ladder was requested to gain access to the roof area. There was some initial concern about the presence of acetylene cylinders in the building and the asbestos roofing sheets but the crews rendered the scene safe. |

19 June |
A call was received from Southampton Airport reporting a light aircraft crashed in the Kent Road area of St Denys, Southampton. Four pumps attended together with appliances from the Airport. Attending crews arrived to find the aircraft on fire and two persons deceased. The fire was extinguished using one jet, one hosereel and breathing apparatus. |

20 June |
One of the largest fires of the year occurred at Allied National, Harts Farm Way, Havant. Approximately 20 hectares of wooden pallets, a paint store, two fuel tanks, a building with an asbestos roof and electrical transmission cables were involved. During fire fighting operations, 17 jets, 2 fan sprays, 1 water monitor, 1 hosereel and 30 breathing apparatus were utilised. All premises surrounding the incident were evacuated. The officer in charge requested 20 pumps at the scene and a total of 31 appliances attended the fire. A further 16 pumps were deployed to stations to provide `standby cover' and many attended other incidents from their standby locations. During the day the Service also dealt with a full emergency at Southampton Airport, a fire at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester, A hazardous materials incident at Titchfield Park, a three pump fire at Basingstoke and 5 incidents on major roads which generated a further 72 fire calls. These together with numerous other smaller incidents made it an extremely busy day for the Control Room staff. |

22 June |
Under Sections 2 and 12 of the Fire Services Act HFRS frequently assist the fire services in neighbouring counties. Under these arrangements Dorset Fire Brigade requested assistance with a 25 pump fire at a factory in Ferndown Industrial Estate. Seven appliances from HFRS were sent to assist together with two senior officers. |

26 June |
Six pumps attended a fire at the Golf Club House, Jacklyns Lane, Alresford. The roof of the 30 metre by 20 metre building was well alight when crews arrived. One jet, 3 hosereels and 10 breathing apparatus were used to bring the fire under control. |

2 July |
A fire at Osborne Road, Farnborough was attended by 6 pumps and numerous special appliances. The residential building 10 metres by 7 metres on two floors contained four flats. The first floor was severely damaged by fire and the remainder by smoke and water damage. Three jets, 3 hosereels and 15 breathing apparatus were used to extinguish the fire and salvage operations were also carried out. |

4 July |
A severe fire was reported at St Michaels and All Angels Catholic Church in Dunsbury Way, Havant. On arrival the officer in charge quickly requested the attendance of 10 pumps and 2 aerial appliances. The part single, part two-storey building, 40 metres by 40 metres was severely damaged with 11 jets, 5 hosereels, 2 aerial appliances and 10 breathing apparatus deployed in fighting the fire. Staff from local schools were extremely concerned for the safety of the children because of large amounts of smoke being generated and an Officer was sent to the schools to offer advice. |

6 July |
A severe fire in a pair of bungalows in Brookside Way at West End was attended by 3 pumps. The fire in the roof was extinguished using 3 jets, 2 hosereels and 6 breathing apparatus. The elderly female occupant from one of the bungalows was taken to hospital suffering burns and smoke inhalation. She has subsequently died in hospital. |

13 July |
HFRS were called to a fire in a single storey thatched building on the A35 road at Hinton, near New Milton. The old school building which was being used as a furniture workshop and shop was severely damaged by fire with 100% of the thatch being lost. Four jets and one water monitor were deployed and the Water Company increased the water supply to ensure that adequate water was available. Five pumps were required at the scene for many hours. |

13 July |
A fire in a property in a terrace of seven houses at Hearsey Gardens, Blackwater required a 4 pump attendance. The fire in one property spread to the houses on both sides. The first house was severely damaged by fire and the roofs of the houses on either side were also damaged. Three jets, 3 hosereels and 10 breathing apparatus were used to extinguish the fire. |

13 July |
The Labour Club at Sandys Road, Basingstoke suffered a severe fire requiring 8 pumping appliances and numerous special appliances. The building, 40 metres by 25 metres was used as a social club and offices. Fire damage extended to 100% of the ground floor and the first floor was severely smoke damaged. Six jets, 3 hosereels and 42 breathing apparatus were used at the scene. In an effort to establish the cause of the fire, the Surrey Canine Support Dog (Star) was requested to attend the scene with his dog handler. |

18 July |
The thatched roof of a cottage at Redhill, Winchester Road, King Somborne was damaged by fire requiring the attendance of 6 pumps. The crews made a good `stop' containing fire damage to 25% of the thatch. |

22 July |
Police called HFRS to a light aircraft that had crashed into a field and was on fire. The plane was located near Cole Henley Farm in the Whitchurch area. On arrival at the scene, crews extinguished the fire removing the body of the deceased pilot. The accident scene was attended by the Air Accident Investigation team. |

Five crews attended a severe fire in a building under construction in Helvellyn Road, Millbrook, Southampton. The building of 3 floors, 20 metres by 6 metres was badly damaged and extinguished using 4 jets and 6 breathing apparatus. |

During the early part of the afternoon fire cover in the Southampton area was extremely stretched when simultaneous fire calls were received to a petrol tanker on the M27 at Rownhams Services and a severe field and embankment fire on the M271 fairly close by. More than 140 emergency calls were received in the control room and a total of 10 pumps were mobilised to deal with the incidents. It highlighted once again the problem emergency service control rooms can be confronted with when highly visible fires are reported using mobile telephones. It is not uncommon for over 100 calls to be received for a single large incident on a motorway. Fortunately both of the incidents were quickly brought under control. The cab of the tanker being severely damaged but the load not involved. |

9 August |
Torrential rain in the Portsmouth area caused severe flooding to parts of the city and generated numerous calls for assistance. A total of approximately 100 calls were received with Officers giving advice at 54 incidents and pumping appliances responding to 23. Three further properties were damaged by lightning strikes during the same period. HFRS resources in the south-east of the county were fully stretched for more than six hours. |

16 August |
A fire in the roof of a thatched cottage at Main Road, Marchwood required the attendance of 10 pumps and numerous special appliances. The building was severely damaged by fire and 4 hosereels and a total of 60 breathing apparatus wearers were used during fire fighting operations to strip the thatch and remove the contents from the building. |

22 August |
A fire involving an electrical powered hot wax cleaner at Wessex Landrovers, Compass Road, Paulsgrove caused extensive smoke logging throughout the building. It was difficult to locate the seat of the fire in the building of 45 by 35 metres used as a showroom and offices. Six pumps and a Turntable Ladder were deployed and the fire was extinguished using 1 jet, 2 hosereels and 10 breathing apparatus. Three positive pressure ventilation fans were used to evacuate the smoke from the building. |
