Forward Plan of Activity for the Committee

1. Background

1.1. At the meeting of the Committee on 18 October 2001, Members discussed the future direction that the Committee would take, and Members put forward a number of areas of work as suitable for future consideration by the Committee. It was agreed that the Chairman and Vice-Chairman would discuss these proposals with the Chief Officers concerned. This discussion has taken place and this report outlines the proposals for future activity of the Committee.

2. Plan of Future Activity

2.1. The County Council's Constitution makes it clear that an important function of a Policy Review Committee is to make a contribution towards policy development. In discussion, it was felt that this remit will be fulfilled most effectively if the Committee's attention is focused on those areas of activity where it is known that the County Council is developing, or will need to develop policy to enable important decisions to be made.

2.2. Consideration has therefore been given to the County Council's forward plan of key decisions, and those items where policy decisions will be made by the Executive Member for the Environment. Consideration has also been given to those areas of activity where it is known that important policy decisions will need to be made in the medium to longer term.

2.3. As a result of these discussions the schedule of business, set out in the Appendix to this report, has been developed. It is proposed that, at future meetings of the Committee, there should be a standard agenda item indicating the areas of work which it is intended to report to the next three meetings of this Committee. This will ensure that Members are kept informed of plans for the future consideration of items by the Committee, and to allow Members an opportunity to influence that schedule.

3. Recommendation:

That the forward plan of activity for the Committee, set out in the Appendix, be endorsed.
