1 Summary

1.1 The following decision is sought on the basis of option 1 shown in Appendix 1 to determine school term dates for 2003/2004

2 Reason

2.1 Consultation with governing bodies and the diocesan authorities has now taken place on two options for school term and holiday dates for 2003/2004 as described in appendices 1 and 2. The consultation revealed a preference for option 1

1. Background

1.1 The usual process is for options to be shared with Hampshire's Teachers' Liaison Panel (TLP) along with Southampton City Council and Portsmouth City Council's TLPs for them to discuss at their individual meetings.

1.2 All three unanimously agreed that Option 1 was their preferred option. A letter was then sent out to all schools in Hampshire, Southampton and Portsmouth by the respective LEAs inviting them to indicate which option they preferred.

1.3 When consulting schools, Hampshire sends the proposed options to neighbouring authorities for information and informs them of the recommendation when agreed.

3. Responses to consultation

      312 replies were received, representing 61% of the County Council's schools. Most respondents (92%) favoured option 1 with 28 preferring option 2. The following table shows the breakdown of preferences for primary, secondary and special schools.

      1. That the school term and holiday dates for 2003/2004 as set out in Option 1 (Appendix 1 to this report) be approved.
