It is tragic to note that despite call-taking time being only 35 seconds with turnout and travel time a further 2 minutes and 51 seconds, a total time of 3 minutes and 26 seconds from the call commencing to pumps arriving, a life was still lost. For all of those involved in the incident it was an extremely traumatic event. |

Firefighting was hampered by heavy smoke that was dispersed using Positive Pressure ventilation fans. |

9 December |
A quickly developing fire in the Waitrose Store at Tresham Crescent, Yateley required the attendance of 15 pumps to bring it under control. Two aerial appliances were also used fight the fire which caused severe damage to 80% of the roof. Fortunately, due to the construction of the roof, most of the damage was external with little penetration inside the building. A total of 183 personnel attended during the 14-hour operation and six appliances from Royal Berkshire and Surrey assisted Hampshire crews. This is a further example of the co-operation between counties under section 2 and 12 arrangements of the Fire Services Act. |

Fire crews were mobilised to a fire in a warehouse at Chalcroft Distribution Park, Burnetts Lane between Horton Heath and Moorgreen. An assistance message was received to `make pumps 10' with 2 aerial appliances also required. The conditions were extremely difficult for firefighting as water used to extinguish the fire quickly froze and made it hazardous for fire fighters moving around the building. Two slipped and fell sustaining injuries. The building was full of paper records which were tightly packaged and proved very difficult to extinguish after the roof of the building had collapsed on top of them. Crews were at the scene for 4 days, the last appliance leaving 96 hours after the first call. The fire was still smouldering and was left to security staff at the site to monitor for further outbreaks. |

The last day of what was the busiest calendar year for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service proved to be a very busy 24-hour period. A total of 156 calls were received to 103 incidents. There were four `make ups' to property fires and four road traffic accidents during the period. During the 2001 calendar year 47,019 emergency calls were received to attend 26,254 incidents making it the largest number of incidents and emergency calls on record. (There were 23,390 incidents for the same period in 2000). As the number of mobile telephones increases, the number of emergency calls received by all emergency services increases also. |

An unusual rescue was needed when the Ambulance Service requested the assistance of crews to help them with a cyclist who had fallen down a bank injuring his spine. In an effort to keep movement to a minimum they required the patient to be secured to a stretcher and lifted out by means of attaching the stretcher to the top of the aerial ladder platform. The rescue was successfully effected and provided a good example of co-operation between the emergency services. |
