The following applications have been received from young people in Hampshire undertaking expeditions, overseas projects, personal development, etc. Details are as follows:
1. Samantha Jacobs, Horndean
In August last year, Samantha completed a wolf research project in Poland and, as part of her work experience placement, she has been asked to return in February 2002.
On this project, Samantha was able to gain many skills including field research techniques and methods of communicating the importance of species conservation. For the return trip, Samantha has raised all but £700 needed and asks for a contribution towards this project.

2. Laura Stummer, Dibden Purlieu
Laura (19) has been accepted on an Operation Wallacea expedition in July next year. Operation Wallacea is a conservation project based in South East Sulawesi in Indonesia and is dedicated to the Conservation of rain forests and coral reefs. Laura needs to raise £3,560 for the expedition and, so far, has managed to obtain £600.
Recommendation: £150
3. Terri-Lee Quail, Liphook
Terri-Lee is taking part in a scientific expedition within the endangered rain forest boundaries of remote Indonesia. There she will carry out research on the species of plants, mammals, insects, birds, etc. to provide accurate data, which will prevent further destruction of the rainforest.
Total cost of expedition is £1,480 (not including flights).

4. Catriona Hendry, Andover
Catriona (17) is undertaking a community project in Tanzania with Hampshire Scout Expeditions in March this year. She will be helping to build an extra classroom to a local school and while there she will also be climbing Mount Kilamanjaro. Catriona will spend the month there at a cost of £2,100. This will include accommodation, insurances, travel, clothing etc.

5. Jen Harding, Silchester
Jen has been chosen to take part in a Student Partnerships Worldwide project in January next year. She will be teaching English, Science and maths in a school in Uganda for eight months.
Total cost is £3,000, of which Jen has raised £1,500.

6. Katie Sloane, Kings Worthy
Last year Katie received a £150 grant from the County Council towards her teaching project in Malaysia. In view of recent global events, she has decided not to go to Malaysia but instead to travel to Australia to undertake a conservation project for a period of five months.
It would therefore, be appropriate in the circumstances, for Katie to retain the grant so it could be used for this new purpose.
Recommendation: Agree to new use of grant
