Hampshire County Council Executive Member, Education 22 March 2002 Surplus Property Report of the County Education Officer |
Item 5 |
Contact: Ian Lawson, Strategic Planning Officer (01962 846350)
1. Summary
1.1 The following decision is sought:
That land at the rear of Wolverdene School, Andover, and the former hostel at The Waterloo School, be declared surplus to educational requirements.
1. Reasons
1.1 An approach has been received from a developer, who is assembling an area of backland for housing development, to purchase a small parcel of land at the rear of Wolverdene School, Andover, which is shown on the attached plan. Part of this land is licensed to an adjoining resident as a garden extension, and the remainder is an overgrown orchard. Both areas could be released without detriment to the school's needs. The school governors have considered the proposal and have agreed that this land can be released, on the understanding that the Education share of the capital receipt will be used to finance improvements to the school premises (compatible with the school's Asset Management Plan). The sale price is subject to negotiation, but the Education share should be at least £28,000. The school has identified alterations to its entrance, to improve security and visitor control, as a high priority.
1.2 The hostel at The Waterloo School, Waterlooville, closed at the end of December 2001, following publication of public notices. There is no alternative educational use for the building, as shown on the attached plan. It may, however, be suitable for conversion to provide low cost housing for key workers (including teachers) and discussions are taking place with a local housing association to see if this can be achieved.
