Droxford Junior School

Report of the Director of Property, Business and Regulatory

Contact: Steve Clow Ext: 7858

1.

Summary

1.1

Droxford Junior School is currently attended by 123 pupils between the ages of seven and ten years. At present there are two single temporary buildings on this site which are used for general teaching, one of which has toilet facilities within the temporary building.

1.2

In order that the temporary buildings be replaced with permanent teaching accommodation an allocation of £203,000, excluding fees, has been included in the Education Committee's 2001/02 Capital Programme to provide two new classrooms and additional toilets.

1.3

The purpose of this report is to outline the proposals and seek approval to the attached building design project appraisal.

2.

Scope of the Works

2.1

It is proposed to construct a single storey extension to the southern elevation of the existing building. The extension will provide two classrooms, each with a wet area, a large chair store, lobby and a link corridor to the existing building. The extension will have a pitched roof and will be constructed from materials that will match the existing building. Roof lights will be installed in the eastern elevation of the building to allow natural light in the classrooms.

2.2

A second small extension will be constructed in the south-east corner of the school, adjacent to the existing pupil toilets to provide additional male WCs. The existing male and female toilets will be stripped out and by reconfiguring the internal walls in this area the female toilets will be enlarged to provide additional WCs. The extension and alterations will ensure the school has the required pupil toilet provision for the current number of pupils attending the school.

2.3

An existing footpath which leads from the main school entrance at the north of the site along the eastern boundary and onto the playground will be re-routed around the new extension. Perimeter paving and low level planting will be provided to the new extension.

2.4

The two temporary classrooms are located near to the western boundary of the site on an area of grass. Upon completion of the extension the temporary buildings will be removed from site and the area will be re-seeded and returned for use as part of the school playing field.

3.

Funding and Timing

3.1

Funding of £203,000, excluding fees, will come from the Education Committee's 2001/02 Capital Programme. The school have made a contribution of £41,000 towards the internal alterations element of the scheme and a contribution of £10,000 has been made from the Policy and Resources Committees' 2002/03 Capital Repairs budget.

3.2

It is anticipated that tenders will be invited during April 2002 and works will commence on site during June 2002 and be completed during October 2002.

Conclusion

The proposed extension will result in permanent replacement teaching accommodation along with additional pupil toilet facilities. Approval is accordingly sought to the attached Design Project Appraisal for the Droxford Junior School scheme, subject to the approval of the Executive Member - Education to the deferral of the Capital Programme allocation to 2002/03.
