GRANTS IN SUPPORT OF INDEPENDENT ARTS ORGANISATIONS AND THE ANNUAL ARTS PROGRAMME AND HAMPSHIRE SPORTS, COACHING AND OFFICIATING BURSARIES

1. The County Council provides financial support for the independent arts organisations serving the County and decisions on the level of support are taken in advance of the financial year in order that organisations have more time for planning their budgets. Independent organisations are thus enabled to deliver arts events and activities for Hampshire residents which support the County Council's strategy for the arts. Grants totalling £712,700 have been approved for 14 organisations and these include the Theatre Royal at Winchester, the Hampshire Dance Trust, which is the countywide agency for the development of all types of dance, and the Forest Forge Theatre Company which serves the rural areas, mainly on the west side of the County. Grants have also been made to organisations which are based outside the County but which arrange events attended by Hampshire residents. Examples are the Bournemouth Orchestra, the Welsh National Opera, Salisbury Playhouse and the Nuffield Theatre in Southampton.

2. Grants are also awarded to groups planning to organise arts events for Hampshire residents. £22,000 has been approved for seven programmes. These programmes are located in various parts of the County such as ArtSway in the New Forest, the Cricklade College programme in Andover, the Phoenix annual programme serving East Hampshire and two programmes within the Winchester City Council area.

3. Grants totalling £4,800 have been awarded to talented sports persons through the Sports Bursary Scheme and grants of £2,070 are to be made to coaches and officials through the Coaching and Officiating Bursary Scheme. In the former category participants in such sports as athletics, clay pigeon shooting, fencing and rowing are being supported. 19 coaches and officials are to receive bursary awards and similarly a wide range of sports is covered such as football and rugby, swimming, badminton and gymnastics.
