REPORT OF THE
EXECUTIVE MEMBER, RECREATION AND HERITAGE
PART II
THE FUTURE TRUSTEESHIP OF THE ALDERSHOT MILITARY HISTORICAL TRUST
1. The Aldershot Military Historical Trust was founded with the aim of creating a museum to represent the military history of Aldershot. All funding for the museum is provided through a Joint Management Agreement between Hampshire County Council and Rushmoor Borough Council and it is managed by the Hampshire County Museums Service. There has been substantial capital development of the museum in recent years culminating in the new John Reed Gallery which was part funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund
2. The Trust has formally requested that the two local authority partners to the Joint Management Committee become the Trust's sole trustees. The County Council recognises that, because of the changes in the profile of the army in Aldershot, the military community will find it increasingly difficult to provide trustees with the necessary local and historical background. As the assets of the Trust are all currently maintained, and the objectives achieved, through funding provided by local authorities, who also own a significant proportion of the assets which are an integral element of the museum, it was felt that the suggestion is a sensible one. Rather than the County Council and Rushmoor Borough Council becoming joint trustees, however, it has been decided that the County Council should be the sole trustee to be consistent with other similar trusts and for the sake of simplicity.
3. Rushmoor Borough Council is committed to the Joint Management Agreement and will either maintain the present agreement or enter a revised one on similar terms if this should prove necessary for legal reasons.
