7 February

A fire at the Hanover International Hotel, London Road, Nately Scures severely damaged the east wing of the extensive hotel complex. A total of 16 pumping appliances and 6 specials were required to bring the fire under control. The fire involved the first floor and roof, 9 jets, a water monitor from an aerial ladder platform and 60 breathing apparatus were used by the fire service.

14 February

What started as a fairly insignificant fire spread into the roofspace of Lyndham House in the High Street at Petersfield. As the fire increased, ten pumps and numerous specials were required to bring it under control. The building of 2 floors, 17 metres by 17 metres, used as shops and offices suffered fire damage to the first floor and 65% of the roofspace. Two jets, 4 hosereels and 16 breathing apparatus were used during fire-fighting operations.

22 February

A call was received to a fire at Southwood Road at Hayling Island with the possibility that the occupants were trapped inside the building. The officer in charge quickly made pumps up to 8 to assist in the search for the missing persons and control the fire. The ground and first floor of the building were well alight and the building suffered structural collapse. The fire was extinguished using 6 jets and 18 breathing apparatus and crews were delayed several hours damping down and turning the debris over. It was later established that the occupants were out at the time of the fire.

24 February

Crews were mobilised to a fire in a carpet warehouse occupied by SSS Sandpiper in Invincible Road at Farnborough. The two-storey building, 40 metres by 20 metres, was well alight and showing signs of structural collapse. The building was totally involved in fire and was eventually extinguished using 12 jets, a water monitor from an aerial ladder platform and 14 breathing apparatus. At one stage there were more than 20 appliances at the scene with assistance being provided by Royal Berkshire and Surrey Fire Brigades. The last crew left the scene some 40 hours after the incident was first reported.

5 March

A fire in an Indian restaurant in Shirley High Street, Southampton, required the attendance of 8 pumps an aerial ladder platform and 7 support vehicles. A row of terraced properties of two floors used as shops and flats was involved in fire with persons reported to be inside the buildings. The fire was contained using 8 jets 16 BA and an aerial ladder platform water monitor. All persons were accounted for at the time of the stop message.

15 March

Control received a call to a person trapped in the hold of the vessel `Claudia Trader' at 102 Berth Western Docks, Southampton. Four pumps, a special equipment unit, an aerial ladder platform and the Technical Line Rescue Unit were mobilised to the scene. The vessel was a cargo vessel with a sub-divided hold containing corn. During unloading operations a sub-dividing partition had failed trapping a worker towards the bottom of the hold. Initially there were concerns that the casualty was going to be buried by the grain so efforts were made to quickly stop the flow. The Technical Line Rescue team provided an airline so that if the flow of grain could not be stopped they had a source of air to sustain the casualty until the rescue was effected. The injured casualty was eventually released and removed from the hold using a stretcher attached to the aerial ladder platform cage.

16 March

The body of an elderly male was located at a fire in Zetland Road, Farlington. Three pumps were used during the operation to extinguish the fire in a first floor bedroom and to remove the body.

17 March

A fire at the La Margherita Restaurant, Town Quay, Southampton, destroyed the roof of the two storey building. Six pumps and 5 support vehicles were used to bring the fire under control using 3 hosereels, 10 breathing apparatus and positive pressure ventilation.

5 April

A fire in a block of flats at Harwood Court, Marryat Road, New Milton, severely damaged a second-floor flat and 7 persons were rescued by fire service personnel. Five persons were taken to hospital but were released after treatment, mainly for smoke inhalation. One jet, 2 hosereels and 8 breathing apparatus were used by the five attending crews. Salvage work was carried out to mitigate fire and water damage.

9 April

A fire in the roof of a thatched cottage at Anna Lane, North Ripley, near Ringwood, was well alight when the first crews arrived. They quickly made up to 10 pumps with numerous special appliances also attending. The roof of the 12 metre by 8 metre cottage was destroyed by fire. Crews used 2 jets, 4 hosereels and 8 BA to bring it under control. The Service had a busy evening with numerous other incidents taking place and crews from as far away as Basingstoke, Portsmouth and Stockbridge were used as relief crews at the Ringwood incident.

12 April

Ten pumps, a water carrier and numerous special appliances were needed to contain a fire at Mill Court, Upper Froyle. This large country house, some 30 metres by 10 metres of 2 floors and basement, was severely damaged. The fire involved the ground and first-floor and 100% of the roof. Four hosereels and 22 breathing apparatus were used during extensive fire fighting operations.

March /April

The County experienced a very dry period, particularly in late March and early April with no appreciable rain in the first two weeks of April. As could be expected, this brought about a general increase in the number of incidents related to gorse, grass and heathland with some fairly significant incidents. The number of incidents of all types increased from an average of 59 per day during the first two weeks of April 2001 to 92 per day for the corresponding period this year. This gives early cause for concern on the financial implications especially as 2001 was the busiest year ever for the Service.
