Personal Development Grants

Report of the Chief Executive

1. Applications have been received from young people in Hampshire undertaking expeditions, overseas projects, personal development, etc. in accordance with the following details:-

1.1. Claire Culverwell, West End

Claire is a member of Girlguiding UK (formerly the Guide Association) and this July she is going to Lake Winnipeg in Canada. Once there she will be camping with Canadian guides for two weeks undertaking various adventurous activities including canoeing, trekking and horseriding. Total cost of the trip is £1,200, and has raised £440 of this.

Recommendation: £150

1.2. Sarah Palmer-Felgate, Winchester

Sarah is currently studying at Peter Symonds College in Winchester and during the summer she has been offered a place with CRUSOE (Crusaders Overseas Expeditions) which offers young people the chance to work with deprived children in Trinidad and Tobago, where islanders lack decent housing, education and medical supplies. Sarah will be mainly involved with organising and running workshops with these children, as well as light building repairs/renovations.

She needs to raise £1,400 to cover the project expenses and has so far raised £300.

Recommendation: £150

1.3. Adam Pearce, Bedhampton

Adam (18) has been accepted by the National Youth Music Theatre to take part in their production of Oklahoma. The production will be taking place in Belfast, Birmingham and Nottingham in the summer. He has also been accepted for the International Music Theatre Festival in Cardiff in October. Adam is being asked to raise £750 for his food, travel and accommodation for the eight weeks. Apart from this, Adam also has to pay for his rehearsals which can cost up to £70 per time.

Recommendation: £150 towards travelling costs

1.4. David Allen, Durley

David, as part of his GAP year has been chosen to take part in an expedition for four months between January and April next year to South America, which includes places such as Equador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile. Once there he will participate in permaculture and reforestation projects involving local farmers which will help educate participants about the cultures of this area of the world; help orphaned/homeless boys in Quito and trekking across extreme areas of South America. David requires £4,300, of which he has already raised £1,000.

Recommendation: £150

1.5. Lorraine Davies, Horndean

Lorraine is a 15 year old Ranger and Young Leader in the Guide Association. Over the last two years she has attended several International Opportunity weekends and has now been selected to participate as a team leader at the
Ma-buyu International Camp at Waddow Hall in Lancashire from 23 July to
5 August this year. Lorraine will be responsible for a group of 8-25 year olds from several countries in the Commonwealth. For her to take part she needs to raise £500 towards her camp and travel costs.

Recommendation: £100

1.6. Henry Lewith, Sway

Henry has been accepted in this year's Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race which takes place between 14 and 27 July this year. It starts in Malaga and finishes in La Coruna. Henry is taking part in this event as part of his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. The Race will cost £1,280 and he is actively fundraising to cover these costs by working in a nursing home and organising car boot sales.

1.7. Jennifer and Victoria Cheshire, Winchester

Jennifer (18) and Victoria (16) have both been chosen to take part in a guiding event in Our Cabana, Mexico in August next year. The main focus of the trip will be taking part in an international friendship session at one of the Guide Association's World Training Centres. They will be working with guides from all over the world exchanging cultures and helping to build and furnish schools and community buildings.

Each guide is expected to raise £2,000 to cover travel, accommodation, food and equipment. Both Jennifer and Victoria have raised £100 each.

Recommendation: £150 each
