Managing unacceptable behaviour

Procedures for managing unacceptable behaviour adopted by Brune Park Community School, Gosport, Hampshire, based on the model code of conduct.

In all cases:

`young person' = pupil, young person, or visitor to site

`staff'= the appropriate member of staff

Unacceptable behaviour:

Examples of recommended action

Young person is in breach of the code of conduct

Young person fails to respond to interventions

Young person fails to respond to interventions

Young person continues to fail to respond

Serious breaches of the code of conduct and/or failure to respond to interventions

Behaviour which puts the health and safety of the young person or others in school or youth centre at risk and behaviour which shows no sign of improvement despite support

    · Use the full range of behaviour management techniques, e.g. verbal warning, a gentle reminder, change of task or activity, questioning, diversion and diffusion, humour

    · Verbal warning

    · Loss of privilege or access to particular activities

    · Brief `cooling-off' period

    · Formal one-to-one discussion with member of staff

    · `Cooling-off' period extended to a short ban

    · Support from peers requested

    · Support from another (more senior/experienced) member of staff

    · Phone call home

    · First written warning

    · Meeting with young person and/or parents, as appropriate

    · Letter home to parents/carers

    · Liaison between Youth Service & school for information and/or support

    · Final written warning

    · Long-term or permanent exclusion from certain activities

    · Request to school/Youth Service and/or outside agencies for support if appropriate

    · Request for support from the headteacher or Senior Youth Worker leading to exclusion or other sanction if appropriate

    · Permanent exclusion by school and/or youth centre

    · Request for support from senior manager

    · Police involvement may be appropriate.
