24. TEACHER RECRUITMENT

The Council received a presentation by Dick Powell from the RE Teacher Recruitment Initiative (RETRI). RETRI was established about three years ago by Culham Institute, Oxford and is an independent organisation funded by the selling off of church colleges in the late 1970's.

Members received a very full and informative presentation concerning a wide range of topics concerning teacher recruitment.

At the moment approximately 700 PGCE teachers are required to fill all outstanding vacancies nationally within the RE spectrum. Statistics show that the largest increase in RE teachers have tended to appear between 29 and 35 year olds usually looking for a change in career. A number of poster campaigns have been launched to try and entice people into the profession and a comprehensive website is also available via RETRI.

Following discussion, SACRE agreed to establish an ad hoc working group to look at Hampshire's strategies to try and maintain recruitment levels and retention on proper career options for RE. It was agreed that the following people would meet at a mutually convenient time in the near future: Nora Horrigan, Judith Lowndes, Jim Graham, Canon J. Turpin, Tonie Ronane, Hugh Benzie, Colin Benton.

The Chairman thanked Mr Powell on behalf of the Council for his detailed presentation and confirmed that he would report back with the findings of the ad hoc working group in due course.
