1 Summary
1.1 This report presents a brief summary of the results obtained in GCSE and end of key stage national curriculum assessments by pupils in Hampshire schools. Except for Key Stage 1, all results are still provisional and subject to change. Details for Key Stage 2, 3 and GCSE are being checked with schools. It is anticipated that the secondary schools' individual GCSE results will be produced on 15 October 2002 and be tabled for members at the Policy Review Committee meeting.
1.2 The provisional figures indicate that the percentage of pupils achieving five or more GCSE grades A*-C has risen to its highest ever figure at 57%. This year's key stage results show that the performance of 7, 11 and 14 year olds has maintained the high standards set in previous years.

2.1 Based on provisional results, the percentage of pupils gaining 5+ A*-C at GCSE in 2002 is 57%. There are no valid national or comparator LEA data available at present but Hampshire's performance is expected to remain significantly above the national average.
2.2 The GCSE examination results table listing each school's summary results is expected to be tabled at the Policy Review Committee meeting.
3 National Curriculum key stage assessments

3.2 The percentage of Hampshire pupils achieving Level 2 and above in reading and writing, has remained steady. The pattern is generally in line with the national picture and Hampshire's performance remains above the national average. In spelling the performance improved by 2% points. In Maths, a small drop of 1% from a very high value was achieved, in line with national trend which also dropped by 1%.

3.4 Hampshire pupils' attainments continue to be above the national average. A 3% rise in maths was achieved, and a slight decline of 1% in English. In science there was a decrease nationally of 1%, and a 2% decrease in Hampshire.

3.6 The proportion of pupils achieving Level 5 in English has risen this year and remained steady in maths and in science. The national trend rose by 1% in English, but 2% in Hampshire. In maths, the national trend was up 1%, and in Hampshire remained steady. In science both Hampshire and the national figures remained at 2001 levels.
3.7 The Hampshire figures continue to be well above the national average at Key Stage 3.
4 Recommendations
1. That pupils, teachers and those who support them be congratulated for their continued hard work and achievement in national examinations and assessments.
