Summary |

1.1 |
Yateley Secondary School is a large 11 - 18 comprehensive school with a current number on roll of 1,469 pupils. The school is located in the centre of the town of Yateley and shares its site with Westfields Infant and Junior Schools. The school was constructed in 1968 and is of a SCOLA design. The school has been extended during the 1970's and 1990's with the latest phase of development to construct a small extension to the music block being completed during 1999. |

Following a successful bid under the 2002/03 Seed Challenge Initiative an allocation of £52,000, excluding fees, has been made in the Education Committee's 2002/03 capital programme. This funding, along with a contribution of £198,000, excluding fees from the school, will be combined to provide a new dance studio at this school. |

The Director of Property, Business and Regulatory Services has progressed the design of the proposed new development and the purpose of this report is to outline the proposals and seek approval to the attached design project appraisal. |

2. |
Scope of the Works |
|
|
2.1 |
It is proposed to construct a single storey extension to the west of the school site between the existing swimming pool block and squash court to provide a new dance studio. The new building will incorporate one of the existing squash courts as part of the studio. The extension will also provide a foyer, technicians office / control room, dressing room / store and an accessible WC. The wall between the remaining squash court and the dance studio will be thickened to help increase the acoustic separation between the two areas. |

2.2 |
Internal alterations to the existing building will involve the reconfiguration of the community wing entrance and link corridor to the swimming pool to incorporate the installation of a platform lift which will provide access to the new accommodation. A ramp will be provided to the southern elevation of the new building. |

2.3 |
In order to provide some natural daylight to the studio foyer glass blocks will be utilised. It is also proposed to incorporate additional glazing above the timber finished doors and the internal studio foyer doors in order to introduce natural light. |

3. |
Funding and Timing |
|
|
3.1 |
An allocation of £52,000, excluding fees, has been included in the Education Committee's 2002/03 Capital Programme from the Seed Challenge Initiative. The school has made a contribution of £198,000, excluding fees providing total funding of £250,000, excluding fees, for the proposed new dance studio. |

|
3.2 |
It is anticipated that tenders will be invited during November 2002 and work will commence on site during January 2003 and be completed during August 2003. |

|
Conclusion |
|
|
|
The proposed new teaching accommodation will provide a new dance studio to meet the current curriculum needs. Approval is accordingly sought to the attached building design project appraisal. |
