Summary

1.1

Lymington Junior School shares its site with Lymington Infant School and is located in the north of the town of Lymington. The school was constructed in 1972 and is of SCOLA design. An infill extension completed in 1996 provided a new library for the school.

1.2

Under the Key Stage 2 Initiative an allocation of £214,000, excluding fees, has been made in the Education Committee's 2002/03 capital programme for a scheme to provide two additional classrooms at this school. The school has also made a contribution of £62,000, excluding fees, towards this project. TBC

1.3

The Director of Property, Business and Regulatory Services has progressed the design of the proposed additional accommodation and the purpose of this report is to outline the design proposals and seek approval to the attached design project appraisal.

2.

Scope of the Works

2.1

It is proposed to construct a single storey extension to the northern elevation of the existing building on an area of the school playground. The extension will adjoin the existing building via a new glazed link and the new accommodation will provide two general teaching classrooms, each with a wet area and store and cloaks/resource area for the two new classrooms.

2.2

The northern elevation of the new extension will have areas of glazing to offer good views across the school playing field and natural light and ventilation. Clerestory glazing will be included to the southern elevation and a large roof overhang will prevent solar gain and will offer a covered area to the perimeter of the building.

2.3

An area of hard paving with low level planting will be created between the existing and new building either side of the glazed link and paving will be provided to the perimeter of the building beneath the roof overhang.

3.

Funding and Timing

3.1

An allocation of £214,000, excluding fees, has been made in the Education Committee's 2002/03 Capital Programme from the Key Stage 2 Initiative. This funding will provide two additional classrooms and the school has made a contribution of £62,000, excluding fees, providing a total of £276,000, excluding fees, for these proposals.

3.2

It is anticipated that the scheme will be tendered during October 2002 and works will commence on site during January 2003 and be completed during August 2003.

Conclusion

The proposed scheme will provide the required additional Key Stage 2 accommodation. Approval is accordingly sought to the attached building design project appraisal.
