INTERACTIVE FIRE SAFETY CD-ROM FOR CHILDREN
1. "Sleeping Inferno" is an interactive fire safety CD-ROM for children. It was commissioned by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and Southampton City Council, and officially launched on 17th October 2002. The purpose of the CD-ROM is to provide a new and exciting way for children to learn relevant information and make informed decisions and take responsibility for their own fire safety.
2. It invites users to investigate a virtual reality family home and to explore every day objects and rooms within the home. Appropriate sound effects are activated as potential hazards are "clicked-on" and still photographs - taken from real incidents - are revealed in the house to show the dangers from fire.
3. The Authority has received a demonstration of the new initiative and the Chief Fire Officer and Members have congratulated those Fire Safety staff involved in the project. Aimed essentially at school children at Key Stages I and II, the CD-ROM will provide a valuable resource for teachers and complement the existing fire safety teaching already undertaken in schools. The Authority is to receive a further report in twelve months time on the impact which "Sleeping Inferno" has had in schools.
