SUMMER 2002 EXTERNAL EXAMINATIONS AND NATIONAL CURRICULUM ASSESSMENTS

1. The Executive Member for Education, together with the Education Policy Review Committee, have considered a detailed report on Summer 2002 examination and assessment results. They have congratulated pupils, teachers and all those who support them for the continued hard work and achievement in national examinations and assessments.

2. At GCSE, a total of 57% of Year 11 pupils achieved 5 or more A*- C grades, an increase from 56% in each of the two preceding years. It is noteworthy that boys have managed to improve their performance relative to girls this year, although they still have some way to go before they reach the same levels of achievement. These results continue a steady upward trend over the past six years, and Hampshire's performance remains well above the national average.

3. At Key Stage 1, performance by Hampshire children in reading and writing remained static; spelling improved by 2 percentage points. All these results were ahead of the national average. However, in maths there was a decline of 1% from the previous year, but that result reflected a similar 1% decline nationally.

4. At Key Stage 2, there was a slight decline in children's performance in English and Science, again in line with national trends. However there was a 3% improvement in mathematics.

5. At Key Stage 3, there was a 2% improvement in levels of achievement in English, whilst performance in maths and science remained static. Hampshire's figures remain well above the national average at Key Stage 3.
