1. Summary
1.1 The following decision is sought:
1.2 That public notices be published, in accordance with Section 31(1) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, to make a prescribed alteration to Glenwood School, Emsworth, by increasing the number of pupils for whom the school makes provision, to a total of 101 pupils, with effect from September 2003.
1. Reasons
1.1 Glenwood School transferred to accommodation in Emsworth, from its former premises in Cowplain, in September 1998. The school caters for pupils of secondary school age with moderate learning difficulties. At the time the transfer took place, it had been hoped that the number of places which the school offered would reduce and that a maximum of 85 would be appropriate. In the event, this has not proved sufficient to meet the demand in the area and there are currently 93 pupils on roll.
1.2 An assessment of future demand has indicated that 101 places would be appropriate as his would provide for all the leavers from the main feeder school (Riverside) and allow a two form entry organisation. This number of pupils can be accommodated satisfactorily within the teaching spaces currently available, so there will be no capital costs arising from this expansion.
1.3 The proposal has the support of the governing body and head teacher of the school. Full consultation has taken place, including all staff, governors and parents of children at Glenwood School and the head teacher, governors and parents of Year 6 children at Riverside School. No adverse comments were received.
