30 November |
A fire was reported at 2339 hours at Thornden School, Winchester Road in Chandlers Ford. The Officer-in-charge quickly requested the attendance of 4 pumps and then made up to 6. A two-storey school block, 40 metres by 20 metres, was severely damaged on both floors with 1 jet, 2 hosereels and 18 breathing apparatus (BA) used during firefighting. The cause of the fire was arson and subsequently two youths were arrested for setting the fire.
6 December |
A serious fire at Hincheslea House, Burley Road, Brockenhurst required the attendance of 8 pumps, 3 Water Carriers and numerous other special appliances. The four-storey timber building, 30 metres by 10 metres, was severely damaged by fire with 6 jets and 4 BA used during the operations. There was concern at one stage when persons were reported to be inside the property and the possible involvement of LPG cylinders and shotgun cartridges. The area is prone to water shortage and in addition to the 3 water carriers mobilised, water was pumped from the swimming pool using a light portable pump.
12 December |
A terrace of three timber bungalows were involved in fire in the High Street in Shipton Bellinger on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border. Six pumps and numerous special appliances were mobilised and crews from both counties worked together to control the fire. The terraced structure, 22 metres by 8 metres, suffered 80% damage. 1 jet, 4 hosereels and 19 BA were used. One male person was taken to hospital by ambulance suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.
21 December |
Forty emergency calls were received in the control room when a fire engulfed the One Stop Store in Park Lane, Cowplain. One minute after arrival of the first pump an assistance message `make pumps 6' was received and a minute after that `pumps 8 with an aerial appliance' also requested. It is thought that initially two calls were received when the fire was contained within the building but 7 minutes later the fire had broken through the roof and as it was then highly visible, a further 38 calls were quickly received. The retail store of 60 metres by 20 metres was destroyed in the fire. 8 jets and 4 BA used during the firefighting operation. It is interesting to note that in support of an 8 pump fire, a total of 32 mobilisations were required.
31 December |
Sadly I have to report that on the very last day of the year a fatal fire occurred at Ipley Way in Hythe. The fire in the first floor and roof of a semi-detatched property spread to both premises. Three jets, 3 hosereels and 6 BA were used in one property and 1 hosereel and 2 BA in the adjacent one. An elderly lady was removed from the building and it was later ascertained that she had died.
December 2002 to January 2003 |
The last month of 2002 and the beginning of 2003 have seen a number of very serious and fatal road traffic accidents. There is always an increase when the inclement weather commences, however, during this period there seems to have been a greater number where the Fire Service have become involved. With new, very thorough accident investigation procedures introduced by the Police recently, it has meant that our involvement for much longer periods is becoming quite normal.
21 January 2003 |
The day of industrial action on 21 January proved to be another extremely quiet day in terms of operational activity. HFRS crews dealt with 21 incidents during the 24-hour period and the military dealt with a further 18. There were no significant incidents during the day.
