Havant Youth Sail Training Scheme has been in operation for 26 years. Through partnership
with the Youth Service, and Hampshire county Outdoor Education Unit, provides sailing
opportunities for young people on both a regular and 'taster' basis.
Young people receive accreditation for their involvement, many use their involvement towards their Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
The development grant would be used to support the operation of the scheme to enable it to provide maximum support for young people. There is a particular need for deep moorings / marina berths for safety craft in order to be able to sail at all states of the tide.

The grant would initiate a Hampshire youth focused voyage in October 2003, working with
senior youth workers to identify young people to sail as crew members onboard the Tall
Ship Stavros S Niarchos.
The grant would provide a part funded berth for two young people from each of the eleven Hampshire districts, match funded with individual fundraising, bursaries, private, statutory and grant making sources. It will be invaluable in its implementation of a pilot project specifically for Hampshire youth with sustainability as its core objective.
It will enable a focused approach across the County providing the opportunity of pre and post voyage development work. In conjunction with those identified as recipients of grant funding, additional recruitment will take place for the remaining twenty-six berths that make up the voyage crew with a commitment to assisting every young person.
