Summary |

1.1 |
Brookfield School is located in Sarisbury Green, east of Southampton. The original school building is an early twentieth century, red brick, single storey courtyard building, and is currently used by the school `technology' department. Subsequent expansion to the north and east took place followed more recently by the creation of a new series of classroom blocks which formed a second courtyard around `D' block. The most recent addition to this group, which completed the courtyard wing to the north, was `M' block which contains ICT and general teaching. |

The total cost of the scheme is £1,435,000 excluding fees. An allocation of £930,000, excluding fees, has been made in the Education Committee's 2003/04 Capital Programme to provide an additional 180 basic need places. The School is contributing £505,000, excluding fees. |

The Director of Property, Business and Regulatory Services has progressed the design of the proposed additional accommodation and the purpose of this report is to outline the design proposals and seek approval to the attached design project appraisal. |

2. |
Scope of the Works |
|

2.1 |
It is proposed to build a new drama and music facility comprising two drama classrooms and three music classrooms, plus associated ancillary spaces including six music practice rooms, a recording room, offices and stores. This building will be positioned to form a third courtyard, and takes the form of three elements, the first housing the two drama classrooms. The secondary element contains the music classrooms and faces onto a new hard landscaped courtyard between it and the rear elevation of the existing sports hall. The third element contains the ancillary accommodation. |

Landscape works include a pathway between the edge of `M' block and the new building. A new area of hard and soft landscaping will be provided in the new space formed between the rear of the sports hall and the music classrooms. |

Funding and Timing |
|
|
3.1 |
Funding of £930,000, excluding fees, has been allocated in the Education Committee's 2003/04 Capital Programme. A school contribution of £505,000 is to be made. |
|

3.2 3.3 |
Subject to the necessary approvals it is anticipated that tenders will be invited during June 2003 and work will commence on site during August 2003 and be completed during August 2004. It is proposed to develop this scheme with Brazier Construction on the basis of a partnered develop and construct approach. Approval to this procurement was given by the Executive Member for Policy and Resources on 10 April 2003. |

Conclusion |
|
The proposed scheme will enable the provision of additional basic need teaching accommodation. Approval is accordingly sought to the attached building design project appraisal. |
