1. Applications have been received from people in Hampshire undertaking expeditions, overseas projects, personal development, etc. in accordance with the following details:-
1.1. Sophie Daniels, Sandleheath
Sophie (15) is taking part in a Girlguiding (Hampshire West) international trip to Gommel in Belarus between 20 and 30 July this year. Once there Sophie will meet other members of the Guiding Association and understand how guiding affects other countries. Total cost of trip is £800, of which she has already managed to raise £500.
Recommendation: £150
1.2. Erica Planer, Kings Somborne
Erica (20) has been chosen to undertake an Operation Wallacea expedition to South East Sulawesi in Indonesia between July and September of this year. Erica will help in collecting data to further their work with endangered areas of coral reef and investigate the economic and environmental impact of coral mining in the Wakatobi National Park. Total cost: £3,500. Amount of request: £2,700.
In April 2000, Erica received a £150 grant from the County Council towards a conservation project in Tanzania and Madagascar.
Recommendation : Nil in view of previous grant awarded.
1.3. Alice Pratt, Locks Heath
Alice (12) is competing in a World Biathle Tour of South Africa in March this year. Alice has to raise £600 to cover her flight and accommodation costs. Biathle is a sport which involves a run, swim and another run.
In view of the timescales involved, a grant of £150 was awarded to Alice to enable her to take part in the Biathle Tour.
Recommendation : £150 (already allocated)
1.4. Paul Hewett, Nicholas Brook, Yolanda Massey and Jennifer Phillips, Romsey
Paul, Nicholas, Yolanda and Jennifer (aged between 16 and 18 years) are taking part in a Romsey Abbey Youth Mission trip to South Rwenzori in Uganda between July and August this year. Total cost of trip per person is £1,200. Ten people will be leaving for Uganda. Once there, they will provide educational development workshops for the young people giving an insight into western culture.
In 2001, four applicants which included Meghann and Matthew Brook and David Hewett each received a grant of £80 from the Portal Prize Fund towards this project in Uganda.
Recommendation: £150 each.
1.5. Mrs Helen Scaiff, Twyford
Helen, a group leader from the Girlguiding SW Region, is taking a group of girlguides to an International camp in Australia during Easter. This includes stopping over in Malaysia. The camp will enable the young women to become independent, think for themselves and learn about cultures worldwide. Each guide will pay for their own costs, but Helen is asking for a grant of £200 towards her costs which include flights, insurance, transport/travel, etc.
Recommendation: £150
1.6. Jennifer Hayward, Fareham
Jennifer (25) has been selected to take part in a GOLD (Guiding Overseas Linked with Development) project during the Summer in Poland. The purpose of the trip is to train participants from Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic on different issues which they can take back to their respective Units. This training will be carried out in English relating to European issues, social problems, health care, etc.
Total cost of the two-week trip is £950 which includes planning, flights, accommodation and resources. Amount of grant requested : £100.

1.7. Nik Roberts, Emsworth
Nik (18) is a student living in Emsworth and has been accepted by the educational charity, Project Trust to spend twelve months teaching disadvantaged children in South Africa in August later this year. In order to do this, Nik needs to raise £3,550 plus additional expenses and so far he has raised £800 towards this.
Recommendation : £150
1.8. Rebecca Dale, Chandlers Ford
Rebecca (19) will be taking up a place on the Music Theatre Degree Course at King Alfred's College, Winchester later in the year. She wishes to participate in a National Youth Choir Tour of the Americas as part of a project to explore and promote music within different countries. She expects the trip to provide her with a wider experience of music thereby benefiting her in her later studies and in her chosen career, eventually, in music. Total cost of tour is approximately £3,500 and she has already managed to raise £2,000.
Recommendation : £250
