Solent Sea Rescue Organisation provides financial, training and administrative support to nine beach and sea rescue units, all declared to HM Coastguard on the South Coast. The Association is experiencing problems with rising insurance costs for the units post September 11th and this will need to be closely monitored in the coming months. The Association does however have cash reserves of approximately £24k, being over 30% of their annual running costs at the moment to sustain the organisation in the short term.

Following a successful application to the Board of the English Federation of Disability Sport for £5K, the contract for this officer was issued for 1 more year and now ends in June 2003. However, this situation is not sustainable in the medium term and a separate report has been prepared to suggest a way forward with this work.

Hampshire Badminton Association

The Badminton Association's Committee has made excellent progress since the opening of the Westgate High Performance Badminton Centre. Business is building up with over 75% of space being reserved for a variety of badminton activity at all levels of the development continuum. This partnership funding will enable the Association to implement their first full year business plan and support the performance squads working from the centre. The element of the application relating to coach education can be serviced through the coaching bursary scheme.

Pitt Street Regional Gymnastics Centre

24,000

Pitt Street Gymnastics Centre in Portsmouth, continues to provide a first-class training venue for Hampshire's best gymnasts and their coaches. The Centre also continues to have a high number of users and produces many excellent gymnasts, both boys and girls, including Vanessa Hobbs who is training as 1 of 10 gymnasts for the possibility of being selected as part of the Olympic Squad for Athens in 2004. The City are still assessing the potential of moving the centre on to the site of the Mountbatten Centre should the re-development of Portsmouth north go ahead. Members and Officers are monitoring the situation closely via the Joint management Committee.

British Judo Association (Hampshire County)

2,500

1,000

The British Judo Association, Hampshire County, runs a comprehensive programme of competition and gradings for players of all ages. They also provide coaching to squads of outstanding players who aspire to representative honours. In 2003/04, the Association will also be contributing to the implementation of the soon to be produced, regional Judo development plan. The Association has £7,431 in reserve being over 75% of their annual running costs. This is partially due to the fact that the Association's shop did well and gradings income did not decline. Although some of this will be held in reserve for the replacement of mats, it is proposed that the grant be reduced by £500. However, officers will stay in close contact with the association to monitor activity and the budget and should there be a change of fortune, bring a request for additional partnership funding back to the Executive member later in the year.

Centre of Excellence for Swimming in Hampshire

5,000

5,000

In 2002/03, the Centre provided direct aid to swimmers (swimmers do not apply to the sports bursary scheme), and warm weather training abroad prior to major competition. In addition, swimmers also received support to attend major swim meets to help them progress through the competition levels. Similar activity is planned for the forthcoming year.

It is also proposed that in 2003/04, officers undertake a review of the role of the centre in light of some emerging developments with British swimming in the north of the county.

-

22, 979

This award represents Hampshire's pro rata partnership funding towards this 5 year project. Plans for cricket, athletics and tennis have been completed this year to add to those of netball, rugby, swimming, girls football, basketball and hockey. A decision on these plans has been deferred by the lottery whilst an audit takes place but we hope that awards will be made in due course.

Over the 5 years of the programme, an investment of £1.6 million is anticipated for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Sports Partnership. In addition, new opportunities for investment in coach education and other areas is also anticipated.
